My situation was a little tricky because I was wanting this rack to work on my Toyota Tundra, as well as my Ford E350. The Toyota was an easy fit, the van, not so much. The rack is great great quality and built extremely well. Installing it in the hitch is a little more work that other racks with built-in anti-wobble devices, but it is absolutely rock solid when it’s installed. Unfortunately, I’m a little bummed that it doesn’t fit 20” bikes as advertised. I have 3 kids. One on a 27.5” and two on 20” bikes, so it was important to me that they fit. I’ve put padding around the baskets for their bikes to make a janky work-around, but it seems it would be extremely easy to just build a smaller basket as an option for consumers with kids. I’m considering having a fab shop just modify them. Not an expense I was looking forward to after dropping $1,200 on a bike rack…

A story about my old rack, you know the type: hitch-mounted, with the bikes hanging from two sticks. It took me a frustrating half hour to figure out one way to nest three bikes on a “five bike” rack where the handlebars and seats and pedals and frames and wheels and various mechanical components weren’t smashed together. I had no desire to partially disassemble my bikes to transport. The two other bikes had to go in the truck bed. And two of the bikes didn’t really fit on the sticks, so one arm went under the front of the frame and the rear wheel hung a few inches off the road. On the trip, I stop for gas, and discover that all the bikes have slipped or jumped out of position. I “fix” this and drive carefully with one eye on the review view mirror. I get to my destination and one of the new bike frames had been severely gouged by the neighboring bike’s pedal pins. When I get home, my bike had some shifting issues. Instead of spending my time riding, I’d need take care of that. I only learn later that if a bike is anything other than an adult road bike, you must purchase frame adapters so that the rack carries the frame adapter and you have faith that the frame adapter carries your bike. My choice was to spend the extra $250 to buy five adapters with the extra time to put them on and take them off only to shift the potential damage elsewhere on the bikes and maybe still not fit five bikes, or to get a different rack.
So after looking at every other type of rack/mount, I buy an ALTA rack (five pack).
Ali personally responded to the questions I had before purchasing. Assembly was easy with the online videos. I loaded five bikes on the first try, all of different shapes and sizes, including my drop bar bike, without having to adjust any baskets. No bike touches another bike, and I have no doubt I’d be able to expand to six if needed. You should know that to do its job, the rack is heavy and wide. You’ll need some strength yourself, or a helper, to move the rack when it’s off the vehicle. The rack does not store compactly. I may get the floor stand instead of hanging it. Overall, the pros definitely outweigh the bulkiness when off the vehicle. The ALTA rack will carry the advertised number and you should be able to load it in under 5 minutes! The bikes and the ALTA rack act as one solid unit during transit! The ALTA rack will not wreck your bikes! Because of that I have no regrets and highly recommend.

Giving this rack 5 stars because the rack itself is sturdy, secure, and easy to load and unload! But I also wanted to provide a review specific to my setup, so others have the information. I have a 3rd Gen Tacoma with the factory 2″ hitch. The regular size rack works with the Tacoma, and the tailgate can be opened while the rack is in the up position. The factory hitch has larger external dimensions than many other 2″ receivers. The locking pin was slightly too short to fit the recommended 3/16 shackle padlock (see photo) – recommend to the company to make the pin slightly longer to accommodate this. Currently I could probably only fit a little luggage lock on it, which isn’t that secure. Also, due to the the factory hitch, the vertical stabilizer bracket did not work because the receiver has a flange/lip that prevents the stabilizer from working as it is designed (there was no place for the bolt to be seated properly). I had to buy a different hitch stabilizer to get rid of the vertical play.

The rack is amazingly well engineered and built! We brought it Moab the 2nd day we owned it and worked quite well for hauling around 5 bikes to the trails on a combination of paved and pretty rough dirt/rock roads. I’ve used it on my Ram truck with the hitch extender so the tailgate clears the rack, and also a Chevy Traverse, which did not need the hitch extender. In that case the rack had to be hinged back for the tailgate to open all the way. Definitely recommend using the integrated ratchet straps provided by Alta too. They were easy and quite effective at stabilizing the rack to the vehicle.

I’ve owned a competitors high end 4 bike rack system before this, and while I liked it okay there were all these little details where it seemed like to me just a couple small tweaks on the engineering side or the R&D side could have solved them they didn’t. Also when I called support for this kompetitor’s racks I spoke to someone who apparently did not use this rack personally and was quoting specs and instructions from a script. When I called ALTA prior to ordering the guy that answered the phone was more than helpful. He has the same rack I was considering and gave me a ton of support and inside info that put my mind at ease prior to making a sizeable purchase like this. I assembled the rack and loaded my bikes for the first time last week and all I can say is good job ALTA! You can tell this rack was designed and built by the people who were using it, not according to any drawing or engineering modeling software. It’s solid, It’s sturdy, it holds my bikes soooo securely and it doesn’t budge when the road gets rough. Would highly recommend to anyone that needs to transport multiple bikes and doesn’t want to deal with all the little “issues” that come from making a product that looks flashy but lacks real function! This thing is the last bike rack I’ll ever need!

Great product and service. A lot more stable than the 4 bike platform rack we have used for years. First 1000mi trip with 4 bikes (gravel and road) were without issue. Narrow road tires (28mm or less) need cushioning in the baskets to avoid metal on carbon rubbing but resolvable using foam pool noodles. Still working on a single piece reusable solution. Ali is enthusiastic and very helpful. He saw us coming with 4 bikes on a Sprinter Van as he was leaving and returned to the shop to greet us. Made locally. Highly recommend

Done correctly, It’s easy to load bikes and the straps make the bikes feel very secure, even on very rough terrain.
If I had one complaint it would be that there is somewhat of a multi-step process that takes a while to get accustomed to when loading/unloading bikes. Remove safety pin, lower rack, load bikes, brake lockers on each brake lever, raise rack, secure safety pin, strap each tire… All steps are quick, but there are multiple things to do for each bike. It makes the process feel a bit cumbersome. However, once done and double checked I have no doubt in my mind that the bikes are safe and secure.
Overall, Great rack! Would buy again.

First cross country trip is in the bag. Rack/bikes were mounted on our Toyota Sienna. I flipped the stabilizing plate that pinches on the rack/hitch junction. This made the tongue that hangs down a couple inches, stick up, giving me a little extra clearance. After doing that I didn’t drag on any sketchy gas station entrances, or dirt road humps with over 1000 miles of driving and multiple rides with the kiddos. The bikes were super solid on the rack, and I am stoked for the purchase.

Love this Rack! Truly engineered to be user friendly and simple. I have already traveled a few hours for a family camping/ biking trip. We live in Western PA and have three young kids (ages 10, 5, and 4). Our summer vacation was Ohiopyle, PA, famous for some great whitewater rafting, scenic hiking trails, and the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) Trail. The kids are just old enough to be pedaling themselves on some short trail rides so we were in the market for a rack that can accommodate 5 bikes. I did a lot of research on manufacturer sites, Reddit, YouTube, and cycling mags. I chose the Alta GPR 5 pack for its modularity and solid build. Also, Ali was punctual and helpful with my pre-purchase questions (Thank you, Ali!). While none of the racks I could find on the market (including Alta) officially accommodate small kid’s bikes with 16″ wheels, I have two bikes of that size. I was able to make it work perfectly with some hand-made modification. I am reassured that as my kids grow into bigger bikes, this rack will easily accommodate whatever we need. I’ve added some photos of my modifications. Because the 16″ kid’s bikes have a short wheelbase, the back wheel did not reach the bottom horizontal bar. I went to Ace and purchased two 4″x4″ U-bolts and some adhesive rubber pads, then bolted a 1″x4″ board onto the vertical beam at the height necessary to tie down the back wheels. I mounted the two 16″ bikes to the immediate left and right of the vertical beam. For the baskets, I used the GROMs with a wheel choke attached low on the angled bars of the basket and cut some pool noodles to pad the top of the basket from marring the fork and down tube of the small bike frames. It all worked perfectly. To boot, I got multiple positive comments on my awesome rack, and though I saw many other vehicles in Ohiopyle hauling bikes, none of them were carrying 5 and none were as bada$$ as mine.
